Alumni Plaza
Alumni Plaza: The Social and Recreational Hub of SMSU
The Alumni Plaza is a campus green space enhancement project that was led by the SMSU Alumni Association. This space connects the SMSU Residence Life area with the academic area on campus. The area is located between the Conference/Student Center, Recreational Athletic Facility and Commons Central. This area has become the social and recreational hub for students, alumni and community on campus. The Alumni Plaza features a memorial and recognition program where alumni and friends can leave a lasting legacy on the campus. The main construction is complete, but the Alumni Association is still selling bricks which will provide funding for some more trees, shrubs, benches, and other amenities to the area.
Deeann Griebel ’80, an SMSU alumna, contributed a $200,000 matching grant to jump start this project. As a loyal supporter of Southwest Minnesota State, Deeann knows just what kind of impact this space on campus has for recruiting and retaining the best students at SMSU. Together, alumni and friends were able to match and exceed Deeann Griebel’s gift bringing this $600,000.00 project to a successful implementation.
The Alumni Plaza Features:
- A beautifully landscaped connection between the residence halls and the core of campus
- An amphitheater ideal for outdoor concerts, theater productions, readings and bands
- Many multi-functional recreation and gathering spaces
- A sculpture by SMSU Alumnus John Sterner ‘89
